The Winelands is a beautifully scenic area around an hour’s drive from Cape Town, with gently rolling green vineyards blanketing the Franschhoek and Stellenbosch valleys. The Constantia Wine Route is a 20-minute drive from Cape Town and home to the country’s oldest wine estate: Groot Constantia. A mere one hour’s drive from Cape Town lie the valleys and mountains which have become synonymous with some of the world's finest wines. Whale watching from the clifftops of Hermanus
Built along the beautiful shores and cliffs of Walker Bay, Hermanus has grown from a small seaside resort town to become possibly the best-known place for whale watching in the world. The migrating southern right whales use the calm waters and steep shores of False Bay and Walker Bay as sheltered locations to calve and rest up before heading south towards Antarctica with their young. The whales can be seen between the months of June and October in this area.

  • South Africa is blessed with over 2’500 km of coastline to explore crossing two oceans

  • Table Mountain in Cape Town is believed to be one of the oldest mountains in the world and one of the planet's 12 main energy centres, radiating magnetic, electric or spiritual energy and has more than 2,200 species of plants, 70 percent of which are endemic. 

  • There are more than 1 500 plant species on Table Mountain in Cape Town alone. This represents more floral species than the whole of the United Kingdom.

  • The meandering 850km road through Cape Winelands is world’s longest wine route. Route 62 runs between Cape Town, Constantia to Port Elizabeth, via Oudtshoorn and the Garden Route, embracing 350 years of wine making as it passes classic Cape-Dutch homesteads, green mountains, 200 cellars and miles and miles of vines.

  • A South African fish migration is so huge it can be seen from space. Between May and July every year millions of small silver fish travel in vast shoals from the cold waters off South Africa’s Cape Point up to the coastlines of the northern Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal. This annual event is called the Sardine Run. The shoals are so big – 15km long, 3.5km wide and up to 40m deep – they can be seen by satellite. In their wake come hundreds of birds, sharks, whales, dolphins, all eager to feast.

  • South Africa is the largest producer of platinum in the world. In 2014 it produced 110,000kg, more than four times the amount of the next biggest producer, Russia.

  • South Africa is full of record-breaking animals. It’s where you’ll find the largest land mammal (elephant), the largest bird (ostrich), the tallest animal (giraffe), the largest fish (whale shark), the largest reptile (leatherback turtle), the fastest land mammal (cheetah) and the largest antelope (eland).

  • South Africa is five times the size of Japan and three times the size of Texas.

  • South Africa is home to eight world heritage sites

  • The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is one of eight in the country. It's the world's richest hominin site, home to around 40% of the world's human ancestor fossils.
